Light shines on Candle House

ISIS Waterside Regeneration’s vision for the Granary Wharf site has now been realised as the twenty-one storey cylindrical residential building called ‘Candle House’ officially launched last night. The launch marks the completion of the final stage of development at Granary Wharf, which has undergone a £90 million facelift and includes the new City Inn hotel and Waterman’s Place.

After exploring many dramatic forms, the design team led by careyjones developed the cylindrical Candle House design. The copper and red brick exterior of the circular tower visibly alters the skyline south of the city centre. The final form of the building was developed during design workshops with Leeds Civic Architect John Thorp in 2005. Considering a bird’s eye view of the development, the proposed split bar building originally planned for the third stage was replaced with a predominantly residential circular building which would make the most of its location and provide extensive 360º views from the Italianante towers at Temple Works to the south in Holbeck Urban Village, the cosmopolitan city centre to the north to the Yorkshire Dales beyond.

Five years later, careyjones Architects and ISIS have constructed a building which stands out both architecturally and structurally not only due to its unusual circular shape but also the ‘twisting’ composition of the brickwork design. The team also attempted to take this concept of blue-sky thinking one step further, by incorporating a communal roof-top terrace which is now one of the key features of the development, built on the twenty-first floor and residing at a mighty 75 metres above the ground, it is the highest garden of its kind in Leeds. The decked garden features large glass windows surrounding the circumference of the circular space which will protect residents from the wind while allowing spectacular 360 degree panoramic views of the Leeds city skyline.

There are 160 apartments at Candle House that range from studio to one and two bedroom properties, which have been designed to utilise space created within this unique circular building - with the bathroom and storage rooms situated toward the centre of the cylindrical space, kitchen in the middle and the living areas and bedrooms situated on the perimeter with large windows to make each space light. Candle House also intend to ignite the use of the waterways which run alongside the building, as the ground floor features boating facilities including a separate shower block and storage facilities for boaters who dock along the Leeds/Liverpool canal, or at the newly restored graving dock.
