House Faraday is located in the Lorraine district of Bern, a workers’ neighbourhood of old clapboard residential houses alternating with dull post-war buildings. The area has evolved over the last two years into an "alternative” urban village. Fuelled by earth probe, the house is well insulated and with controlled ventilation. It provides cover for wind and weather, as well as noise and the electromagnetic fields of nearby electric power, hence the name “House Faraday”. The corrugated copper sheet cladding will age quickly and this will give it a touch of sensuality. Through oxidation, the copper will change its colour to dark brown, and after 20 to 30 years to light green. This is the first time that an experimental spirit has visited Bern and Lorraine is arguably the only district where this would be acceptable.
