US-based practice Steven Holl Architects has won an international competition for a gateway tower development for Copenhagen harbour, called the LM Project.
Holl’s design features two towers over an entrance to the harbour connected by two public footbridges 65m above ground.
The Langoline Tower, proposed for a dock formerly used by ocean-bound ships, references the site’s history with its prow-like public viewing deck alongside cafés and galleries.

The other tower, Marmormolen, has a city-facing terrace that overlooks a public auditorium below.
Coloured aluminium soffits beneath the bridges and cantilevers re-emphasise the separate identities of the linked structures.
The bridges linking each tower meet at an angle to create a single footpath, which the architect has described as “a handshake over the harbour”.
Both towers have glass curtain walls; the project’s sustainability credentials are boosted, however, by the use of photovoltaic panels, a sea water heating and cooling system, natural ventilation and wind turbines along the roof of the footbridges. These measures are expected to generate enough electricity to light all the public space within the scheme.
The competition jury unanimously selected Holl’s design, saying it “involves a sense of place… essential for a project on this prominent site.”
