Ofis designs Ljubljana’s Dot Envelope mall for Mercator

Dot Envelope, a low-cost shopping mall by local architect Ofis for Slovenia’s largest food retailer, the Mercator chain, has opened in Ljubljana.

The 2,000sq m mall, on a historic industrial site in the capital, incorporated the existing facade of an old butcher’s hall, while a disused water tower was rebuilt alongside a new prefabricated concrete hall.

A tight budget of £48,500 had been allocated for decorative finishes on three sides of the building, but in the end was only enough for one of them.
As a solution, the architect used bronze-coloured metal sheeting to over 20% of the building, then cut metal circles from the sheets to decorate the remainder.

Metal chain was arranged around the dots, which over time will become a giant trellis covered in plants.
