Graeme Massie Architects has won the competition to design the Scottish pavilion at the Kolkata book fair in India on January 28-February 2009, when the book fair will have a Scottish theme overall.
The Edinburgh-based practice won first prize in the competition, which was organised by Glasgow’s Lighthouse architecture centre on behalf of the British Council.
The 400sq m open-plan, triple-height wooden pavilion can be divided up into smaller spaces using jute curtains, a material common to both countries. It will be at the book fair for two weeks, and will be easy to reassemble elsewhere or recycle afterwards.

The internal design for the Scottish pavilion
The Kolkata book fair is the best attended in the world, and each year takes a different country as its theme. A year-long educational and cultural exchange programme, Scotland and Kolkata Connections 2009, to be led by the British Council, will follow the event.
