El-Wakil wins classical architecture prize

gyptian architect Abdel-Wahed El-Wakil has won the $200,000 (£127,000) Richard H Driehaus prize for classicism in the contemporary built environment.

El-Wakil is best known for his mosques, and designed the new Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies which sits adjacent to Magdalene College at Oxford University.

The Islamic architecture specialist graduated from the University of Cairo in 1970 but is now based in Miami, Florida.

His work in the Middle East includes the King Saud Mosque in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and the Halawa House in Agamy, Egypt, which won an Aga Khan Award for Architecture in 1980.

The annually awarded Driehaus prize is administered by the University of Notre Dame School of Architecture in the US.

It was established in 2003 by Richard Driehaus, founder of Driehaus Capital Management in Chicago, and recognises work that embodies the principles of traditional and classical architecture and urbanism in contemporary society.

Previous recipients include Leon Krier and Quinlan Terry.

Driehaus said: “These awards honour those who look to the past as they create and shape the world today. They honour those who understand the value of context, community and the continuum.

“Abdel-Wahed El-Wakil’s work is about the duality of permanence and change. I am thrilled he is this year’s laureate.”

A second award of $50,000 (£32,000), the Henry Hope Reed Award, was awarded to Argentinian preservationist Fabio Grementieri who has worked as project manager on a number of key projects in Bueno Aires.
