A lightweight structural steel roof support system from Arval by ArcelorMittal is set to help revolutionise health service provision in Cornwall, in one of the biggest projects of its kind in the UK.
Some 3,500m² of Arval’s BBA-approved Tactray 90 structural roof tray system for slate and tile support is now being installed at the £20 million Truro Health Park which brings together two GP surgeries and local PCT services in one new, landmark building on part of the former City Hospital site.
The development of the health park has been a local NHS priority for many years since the two existing GP surgeries are based in converted listed Georgian buildings that are not suitable for the delivery of a modern healthcare service.
Capable of spanning up to 3,600mm under normal load conditions, Tactray 90 enables architects to free up internal spaces that would otherwise be cluttered with bracing systems. It is also up to 25% quicker to install than a traditional timber rafter based construction, enabling buildings to be made watertight in super quick time, saving on workforce costs and allowing internal fit out to commence sooner.
At Truro, Tactray 90 will be installed under slate by roofing contractor Progressive Systems for main contractor Carillion Building. The health park, which has been designed by DAC Architects and is expected to open in April 2010, is likely to include a minor procedures unit, podiatry, pharmacy, health promotion, speech and language therapy, physiotherapy and dental services.
The development is being led by NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly as a partnership project for the NHS and is being developed as part of the LIFT (Local Improvement Finance Trust) initiative by Community 1st Cornwall, the local LIFT company and NHS infrastructure development partner, in which the trust is a shareholder.
