Planning approval for Grid Architects' mixed used facility on the Strand, London

GRID Architects has won planning approval for a large residential-led mixed use scheme situated on Strand in the heart of London's West End. The existing office buildings on the site will be replaced with 206 dwellings and 22,500 sq ft of retail, restaurant, leisure and business facilities.

The multi-million pound scheme has been designed by GRID Architects for Mourant Property Trustees Ltd, with Berkeley Homes as Development Manager. It will comprise of a series of mansion blocks arranged around two courtyards connected by an internal colonnade.

The proposals include the removal of Maltravers Street, which currently divides the site, and the widening of the historic Tweezers Alley to the south. The crescent to Strand will be reintroduced with a series of new, active frontages. Extensive public realm improvements will provide wider pavements, renewed street surfacing and a public art installation.

Sited adjacent to the Grade I listed St Clement Danes church and opposite the Courts of Justice, the redevelopment will positively contribute to the Strand Conservation Area. The designs for the new scheme draw inspiration from the surrounding Beaux Arts and Victorian English Baroque buildings on Aldwych, Kingsway and Strand.

The proposed materials include a layered façade of stone, metalwork and glass. Laser cut metal filigree balustrades will provide a relief to the simplicity of the stone façade and echo the surrounding historic style. The filigree is also used to create a ‘mansard' roof form veiling the large terraces behind; when viewed from the street it appears solid but when viewed internally it allows views out.

GRID Architects won an invited competition for the comprehensive redevelopment of the former office building at 190 Strand in 2008, beating MAKE, Eric Parry and Squire & Partners.
