House in northern New England

The long lean house constantly acknowledges the Maine landscape and the view beyond of Casco Bay Islands through a transparent wall. The vertical south facing glass, carefully protected in summer by a deep overhang, makes maximum use of passive solar heating and sunlighting in the Maine winter where daylight lasts eight hours and the sun rises a mere 23° above the horizon. Still, on December 21, sunlight touches the base of the north wall of the living room. I n the same way, the sun’s rays stop inches shy of the glass wall in June.
