The new Sir William Rous Unit at Kingston Hospital centralises all outpatient cancer care and treatment services. It includes palliative care clinics, complementary therapy and, for the first time, provides solid tumour chemotherapy in a day treatment suite, with Macmillan Cancer Support managing patient information and support service.
The design concept was to create a simple, linear building with sustainable materials, soothing interiors and inviting atriums. Materials such as linoleum and bamboo have been selected for the floors with patterns emulating the bespoke sail shape specially designed for the vision panels to the doors which are faced in a rich cherry veneer. The interior design strategy has been to select a palette of colours with accent walls to pick out special features.
A welcoming double-height entrance atrium runs the building’s full depth, filling the central void with filtered daylight. The objective was to create a comforting foyer with the ambience of a hotel lounge. Outpatient consulting suites, diagnostic imaging rooms and Macmillan Information Zone are directly accessible from the atrium at ground level with Chemotherapy and Therapy departments at first floor.
A pergola covered in evergreen climbers leads to the entrance lobby, which has a semi-extensive green roof planted with herbs, low grasses and wildflowers indicative of a meadow, complete with seasonal colour. The external landscape includes a ‘pocket park’ for patients, visitors and staff alike, providing quiet, contemplative space, areas for engagement and for watching the world go by. Planting partial screens outside the consultation rooms form the space provides privacy and calming views from within. A central water feature provides a place of interest and calm. It is designed with integral seating around moving water and grasses to the centre.
