Abu Dhabi's new landmark Formula 1 destination completes

Abridging the race track, it was essential that the Yas Hotel completed in time for the start of the Abu Dhabi leg of the Grand Prix tomorrow - challenge complete.

Asymptote Architecture's design is a truly unique concept born from a love of Formula 1 and the inspiration of speed. The 85,000 sq m, 500 room complex is situated in the heart of the new Formula 1 circuit in Abu Dhabi which will see the largest sporting event ever held in the UAE when the cars compete for the first time on Sunday (following two practise days).

The curvilinear form of the Yas Hotel has been designed, and appears as, an icon of the event, one which in legacy is sure to encourage Formula 1 success in the UAE capital. It is the first hotel ever to span a Grand Prix race track, its bridge allowing an unparalleled view of the action to lucky guests.

From the stands beside the race track spectators will be able to marvel not just at the race below but at the elegant architecture exhibited in the hotel's grid-shell, a 217-meter expanse of sweeping forms constructed of steel and 5,800 pivoting diamond-shaped glass panels, reminiscent of a flowing chequered flag. If it comes across as Gehry-esque, that's because it was designed with expertise from Gehry Technologies as the Building Information Modeling (BIM) Consultant working with Front Inc. from New York and TAW & Partner from Hamburg. The veil-like structure creates a sparkling crystalline centrepiece which visually connects and fuses the entire complex together. Its reflective properties generate optical effects and spectral reflections that play against the surrounding sky, sea and desert landscape bringing the building to life and fusing it with the landscape.

Hani Rashid of Asymptote, who designed the hotel with colleague Lise Anne Couture describes the building's design and it's architecture as: "A perfect union and harmonious interplay between elegance and spectacle. The search for us was to achieve an inspired architectural response to what one might call the 'art and poetics' of speed, specifically as it relates to Formula 1 and motor racing. That notion coupled with the making of a building that celebrates Abu Dhabi."
