Legorreta + Legorreta Sheraton Abandoibarra Hotel Bilbao, Spain

This great hotel
The Sheraton Abandoibarra Hotel is part of the Ria 2000 master plan designed for the City of Bilbao by Cesar Pelli.
Located in the Abandoibarra area, next to the Guggenheim, it is the last property on Victoria Maria Boulevard before approaching the river.

The hotel was designed as a compact volume in harmony with the context that surrounds it. Treated like a stone block, transformed into a perforated “Sculpture,” the design was inspired by the work of artist Eduardo Chillida, and the solid foundation and culture of the Vasque Country.
On the exterior the perforations relate to the views, the mountains towards the north, the river and the old City towards the west, and the park towards the south.
The first levels open towards the park and the upper levels towards the mountains. A tower in the corner has the appearance of a lighthouse.
In the 8-story high vaulted central atrium the perforations play a constantly changing light and shadow game.
Total area: 193,000 square feet
Completed: 2004
