Take off at Gensler’s New York terminal

The first planes have taken off from Gensler’s Jet Blue terminal 5 at JFK Airport in New York.

The design for the 60,000sq m terminal places a heavy emphasis on processing large numbers of passengers, with a 20 lane security checkpoint and 26 gates.

It is wrapped around Eero Saarinen’s original concrete TWA terminal which has been renovated as part of the project. Visitors to the terminal can still access the building through two Saarinen “flight tubes”.

The original building did not have the capacity to accommodate budget airline Jet Blue, which hopes 1 million passengers a year will pass through the terminal on 200 flights per day.

A 5,100sq m central marketplace hosts restaurants, bars, coffee shops and 25 retail units as well as a grandstand and a platform for performances and a ring of LCD monitors supported by steel cables.

Arup has provided masterplanning and engineering services for the project, including a luggage system that can process 4,000 bags per hour.
